round 1...

The right elbow swung into the guy's lower jaw. With the third sprawled across the floor, there're only 7 men left standing, including himself. It was less than a minute ago that those three had their noses up high. Now, this kid, with sleeves torn, hair dripping sweat, looks more menacing than any schooler they've approached before...

The air is stale and humid, and the perspiration makes me it worse. They must have snapped due to the bad weather. To attack me just metres away from the school, geez…

It's a year since I’ve had any proper training, guess the exercise from the past few days helped. Which reminds me, I don’t see any familiar faces in this group…

… A little feint first…

They flinched!

I leapt two steps to the tallest guy, too bad the ones beside you flinched!

I reduced my stride as I saw his arm curl up. The extra step gave me control to dodge his left straight. Momentum from threw me forward and covered the distance of his arm. In such close quarters, I striked freely with my left knee at his body.

But that round was not over.

A guy had gotten out a stick as I entered hostile grounds, and has closed in as I slammed my knee. I need to counter fast! But what about the tall guy? I’ll have to choose one! Shifting my weight onto the left leg, I swung my body. The roundhouse caught the head just before he ploughed the stick. To my relief, the tall guy dropped limply onto the ground as I continued to punch the backstabber’s solar plexus. I gave another left hook to his cheek to play safe, and turned to face the rest of them, skipping back to my original position three metres away.

… This is too much excitement…

… I should plan…

Three guys taken out in a frenzy while they underestimated me, then another two taken out before they’ve calmed down. The other five remaining did not bother to get me while I was near. This could either mean they’re afraid, or they’re planning something. None had bothered to speak up to calm the group though.

On the other hand, I’m panting already. I’ll have to act fast. Sheesh, one year’s really’s the limit. These simple techniques won’t last long. Nothing beats physical conditioning. I’ll take them out before they regroup.

First step, hide my weaknesses and present condition.

Second step, take out the ones who’re afraid.

Third…

… Yeah, not now…

Let’s go!

The pair of broken spectacles lie in the corner of the alley behind the boy. Three of the group’s members had witnessed first-hand the tenacity and toughness hidden behind the thick glasses. They seemed to have chosen to wrong job to take on.

A sudden movement of feet!

*flinch*

The boy shot forward to the centre of the group.

Left straight!

He dodged cleanly and closed up on the tallest guy in the group.

*Oof!*

Hard strikes with the knee followed.

*Ooa!*

The guy whited out due to the momentarily lack of air to the brain.

*Hah!*

A roundhouse kick caught the backstabber’s head.

The boy turned back to face the group while swinging his left into the cheek of the attacker, and backpedalled into the alley once more. The group stood waiting for the next chance to attack…

Sheesh, one year’s really’s the limit. These simple techniques won’t last long. Nothing beats physical conditioning.

Analysing the situation, he could see that it is hard to take them by surprise despite the numbers being halved. After his feint, two flinched, another two tried to attack, while the last had remained still throughout. It will either be him being the leader, or he was too scared to move. In both cases, it is ideal to have him taken out first.

While contemplating his next move, the boy slowly turned his body, placing his right leg directly in front of left. Slowly shifting to get his back nearer to the wall, his fists are clenched, and the grin on his face getting wider by the minute. He is showing no intention of giving up in face of five equipped thugs.

He fixed his stare on the first target.

Let’s see if it’s really fear.

“You’re going DOWN!”

Everyone’s eyes were on the guy.

The frantic victim suddenly flung his stick forward, and turned to run.

*Snatch*

The stick was caught midway and, in another few quick steps, ploughed the back of the victim’s neck.

The boy is now in a great position to escape, being nearer to the exit of the alley.

“Yeah, not now.”

Let’s go!

Back to Earth...

Malix stared at the ceiling fan.
Whirring round and round... just like what Jok did...
But after all, he will never have to return to see that guy again.

Well, at least if I can control it...

He propped himself up, and took a look around his room, the room which he had spent 18 years in.
The room he will not leave behind without a reason.

No, not without a very good reason.

It sure would be interesting to live in that world...

But after all the trouble, Malix is finally back to reality.
What a long and dreary dream it was...

If only he could impress Pepper further...
If only he could beat Jok up real bad...
If only he could accept the invitation...
If only he could...

"Time."
"Huh? Oh my god! I'm going to be late!"

The lethargy from the afternoon nap swept away immediately.
He bounced up, kicked off the blanket and landed by the bedside on both feet.
No more time to think about that dream.
Pepper is coming back at 6, and the nap lasted till 5pm.

Man, I can't believe how long Ive slept... Gotta move fast!

"Argh!"
*Thud*

Recognition(3)...

Jok and Pepper went past the mark once more.

"Another one and I'm out of here!" she smirked.

Jok remained silent...

*ta ta ta ta* the footsteps continued...

"Hey, relax..."
"Stop it."
"Ok..."

Pepper looked worriedly at Jok.
It must have been too much of a shock for him...

*ta ta ta ta*

Just as she opened her mouth again...

"Alright!" a megawatt grin appeared on his face.
"What?"
"I can make it in time!"
"Make what?"
"In time! Make it in time for supper!"
".."
"Yeah! If I sprint now, I will be left with 200 laps by 10pm,
and I'll just drag myself for the last 1 hour!"

*ta ta ta ta*

"Number 200, I'm off."

Pepper jogged off to the west wing, shaking her head in disbelief.

Shouldn't he be more worried about Malix?
After all, it's HIM...

*ta ta ta ta*

"So he's the one huh... I never expected to find him so quickly..."
"The 3rd floor."

Jok turned to see Malix walking on the 3rd storey's corridor.
Just beside Malix was the most powerful guy in the campus.

"So he is indeed one strong bastard..."

Recognition(2)...

Malix groaned. The pain shot through his whole body.

At least I'm awake now.

He grit his teeth and looked in front of him. With his back against the wall, he knows that he is temporarily safe.

There stood the other guy, poised for another attack.

No, wait.

Jok is not going to attack. He carried a different expression on his face.

He looks surprised.

Even though he was too fast for Malix to dodge, even though he's punch was connected perfectly,

even though he has gained the upperhand,

He's showing fear.

Recognition(1)...

Jok backpedaled without looking back, and swung his body to the right. The left punch flew past where Malix's head was less than a second ago.

"Jok! Stop this madness!" Pepper screamed at him from between him and the crouched figure on the floor.

There was a moment of silence as Jok and Pepper exchanged stares.

...

Jok shrugged.

And bent to the left preparing to leap over the bed.

Pepper followed up well.

Jok spun around and jumped at the wall to the right instead. The feint threw Pepper off the wrong direction and allowed Jok to kick himself straight towards Malix. Malix clenched his fists and readied his left arm.

Jok went past Malix's left before he reacted. The speed Jok managed to kick himself from the wall left Malix rooted to the ground.

Wham! The body slammed against the wall from the blow.

Challenge...

"Yeah, that's about what I know."

Each word sent waves of pain through the left of Malix's head.

"But that can't really prove much."

This time, it's from the right.

"Now, now, don't give me that expression."

Sounds like...

"Well..."
"Oh no, no, no! Please, no!"

It's Pepper!

Malix's eyes opened wide. The light filled his vision, and forced him to close back his eyes. At the same time, he turned slightly and raised his right hand to cover the light. He could sense his back ache, but other than that, the whole body was working fine.

"Jok, close the curtains."
"Huh?"
"Please?"
"Yea..."

Pepper shifted her gaze back to the just-awakened casualty.

"You ok?"
"Pepper?"

Malix forced one eye open. There to the left sat Pepper, unscathed, unfazed. She brought Malix's attention to his own body.

"Yeah, I guess so."

I remember I've hurt my spine and knee.... And I've expended almost all of my energy for the day... Oh and how did she...

"So looks like you both owe me one," Jok cut in.
"That's Jo... Just call him Jok, short form for Joker."
"Tsk, you call that an introduction? Well,"

BANG!

"Let's see whether you are worthy enough to call me that."
